Uppropet har inget emot den rättsliga granskningen av Assanges brottmål i Sverige. Det är yttrandefriheten och meddelarfriheten vi vill stå upp för i dessa tider när sanningen alltmer väljs ut och det fria ordet fängslas.

Upprop om utlämning av Julian Assange
Julian Assange kan inom kort komma att utvisas till Sverige
Oberoende av utgången av rättegången i Sverige, anser vi, undertecknarna av detta upprop, att han inte borde utvisas från vårt land till Förenta staterna.
Julian Assange har alltid offentligt hävdat att det han fruktar är att utvisas vidare till ett USA som tänker åtala honom för WikiLeaks’ publicistverksamhet.
Ögonblickligen efter att Assange den 11 april 2019 kommit in i rättssalen i den brittiska domstolen bekräftades denna oro, då Trump-administrationen begärde honom utlämnad.
Julian Assange är journalist med långvarigt medlemskap i sitt hemland Australiens journalistförbund.
Han har vunnit erkännande som journalist med över 15 utmärkelser, senast utmärkelsen från Europaparlamentsgruppen GUE/NGL för Journalister, visselblåsare och sanningssägare.
Brittiska domstolen High Court beskriver Assange i sin dom den 2 november 2011 som “… en journalist välbekant genom att han sköter Wikileaks.”
Vi anser att demokratier kräver en fri press och modiga undersökande journalister som är villiga att avslöja missgärningar.
Av detta följer att publicister inte ska åtalas för att publicera och journalister inte utlämnas för att de åtagit sig att avslöja krigsförbrytelser och kränkningar av mänskliga rättigheter.
Inte heller ska de åtalas för att de skyddar sina källors anonymitet, vilket är den centrala förutsättningen för Trump-administrationens utlämningskrav.
I det brittiska parlamentet har faktiskt labourpartiet motsatt sig att Assange utlämnas till Förenta staterna. Partiet grundade sitt ställningstagande på att “Assange är inte eftersökt för att USA:s nationella säkerhet ska skyddas, utan för att han har avslöjat missgärningar begångna av USA- administrationen och dess krigsmakt.
Demokrati, offentlighet och mänskliga rättigheter är värden det svenska samhället värnar om, vilket vi också är kända för inom världssamfundet, även om det också är sant att Sverige för tjugo år sedan medverkade vid CIA:s extrema åtgärd att två män som sökt skydd i vårt land utlämnades och torterades – det famösa fallet med Agiza och Alzery.
Vi kan inte tillåta att det återigen sker en orättfärdig utlämning från Sverige. Vi får inte bara tro på vad vi står för, vi måste också stå för vad vi tror på.
Vi uppmanar vår regering att upprätthålla de demokratiska värden som vi kollektivt värnar om och inte ge efter för krav att utlämna Julian Assange.

Statement on the extradition of Julian Assange
Julian Assange may soon be extradited to Sweden.
Irrespective of the outcome of his legal case here, we, the undersigned, believe he should not be extradited from our country to the United States.
Julian Assange has always stated that he fears onward extradition to a US prosecution for WikiLeaks publishing activities.
These fears were confirmed within moments of Assange entering a UK courtroom on 11 April 2019 when the Trump Administration demanded his extradition.
Julian Assange is recognised as a journalist through longstanding membership of the journalists’ union in his home country, Australia.
He has been recognised as a journalist with over 15 awards, mostly recently the GUE/NGL Award for Journalists, Whistleblowers and Truthtellers at the European Parliament.
The first line of the UK High Court ruling of 2 November 2011 describes Assange as, ”… a journalist, well known through his operation of WikiLeaks.”
We believe that democracies require a free press and fearless investigative journalists willing to expose wrongdoing.
It follows that publishers should not be prosecuted for publishing, and journalists should not be extradited for taking a role in exposing war crimes and human rights abuses.
Nor should they be prosecuted for protecting the anonymity of their sources, which is the central premise of the Trump Administration’s demand for extradition.
In fact, the UK Labour party of the United Kingdom took the step to oppose Assange’s extradition to the United States in Parliament, on the basis that ”Julian Assange is being pursued not to protect US national security, but because he has exposed wrongdoing by US Administrations and their military forces.”
While democracy, transparency and human rights are values Sweden upholds as a society and for which we are known in the international community, it is also true that twenty years ago, Sweden was complicit in the extraordinary CIA rendition and torture of two men who were seeking protection in our country, the infamous case of Agiza and Alzery.
We cannot allow wrongful extradition from Sweden to happen again; we must not only believe in what we stand for, we must also stand for what we believe in.
We call on our government to uphold the democratic values that we collectively hold, and not to submit to the extradition of Julian Assange from Swedish soil.
